Tree Lovers Day

It's kind of weird to talk about your work on a blog, but I'm talking about it here just to show pictures of my daughter. The occasion? Tree Lovers Day! The purpose? To promote the findings of the Tree Lovers project that I managed, give the participants of Tree Lovers the chance to give Tree Tours in Chater Garden to special guests, and play tree-related games. My opinion? The Tree Lovers did great, the Tree Findings were great, but, because a NGO determines to use as few resources as possible, and hand-made at that, the quality of the event suffers! But I guess that's their perogative. In the end, the volunteers were numerous, the guests were appropriate, and the participants were few. But I got some good pictures!!!

Ghosts in the Trees

There are Ghosts in the Trees! It's bad Feng Shui! They are disturbing our drainage! Their branches might fall down! They might break into our windows! There's Ghosts! There's Ghosts!

Hence the massive topping of these grand old Chinese Banyan Trees (Ficus microcarpa) at Leung King Estates! It was only a few, but very vocal residents of this estates who were concerned. But they influenced the management and they brought in the guys in a truck with chainsaws in hand. Management says they had government permission. But it is proving that this was not completely true! They are now in court and may be required to pay millions.

The rest of the residents were furious! Their beautiful trees were gone, there was no shade to cover them as they walked or played Mahjong, and it is simply now ugly!

There were over 100 trees damaged like this, and it was awful, but it was great publicity about how NOT to care for trees.
